Ultrasonic technology for substrate treatment
WaveBox Ultrasound – Maximum gas yield through fibre digestion
WaveBox (UST-WB)
WaveBox Ultrasonics: for up to 20% more biogas
Between 8% and 15% of the resulting digestate consists of fibres that have not yet been fermented or broken down during filtration. Despite conventional techniques, it is not possible to completely break down the fibres – representing enormous untapped gas potential.
Synergy effect:
By skilfully integrating ultrasonic technology (WaveBox) into the existing biogas plant system, it is possible to break down the fibres even more effectively and quickly, thereby releasing the organic matter. The breakdown of the fibres results in a faster rate of degradation. This allows greater output to be achieved from the same digester tank system.
Cavitation: Ultrasonic disintegration for maximum biogas yield
The WaveBox ultrasonic technology enables the material to be broken down as thoroughly as possible, as the ultrasonic waves cause air bubbles to form and implode within the substrate. This cavitation means that, through the breakdown of fibres, a higher proportion of the organic dry matter can release gas.
Area of application:
The rod transducer and the sonotrode are each excited by a transducer and transmit the sound into the medium via the end faces of the vibrating masses. This intense cavitation breaks down the biomass and intensifies the fermentation process. In the high-power ultrasonic system from BTSüd GmbH, the biomass is treated with ultrasound in the 20 kHz frequency range. The hard water vapour cavitation induced by this process leads to the disintegration of biomass – and thus the breakdown of biomass cells – even at very short treatment times of just a few seconds.
Advantages
Wavebox
Treating the substrate with ultrasound can, on the one hand, generate a higher gas yield by improving the degree of biological degradation, or reduce the amount of substrate required whilst maintaining the same gas yield; on the other hand, it can lower the viscosity in the fermenter, resulting in lower power consumption by the agitators. It is these positive effects that make it possible in the first place to operate fermenters stably with a substrate mix that is very fibrous and difficult to ferment.
